Once Upon a School

Once Upon a SchoolThere's just not enough saints, givers and teachers in this world... but you can help make a difference. It's a time of service and sharing, and Dave Eggers has recognized it – and provided us with a platform for making a difference in our local schools; by teaching and leading kids as a volunteer. Simply dream up a project, make it happen, and tell your story to inspire countless others.... More

American Express funds $2.5 Million to 5 user-selected projects addressing everything from environmental issues to education, community development to health. Meaningful content drives great design, as shown in the clear and crisp layout of this altruistic project. Design and the Elastic Mind - MoMA

Design and the Elastic Mind - MoMADesign and the Elastic Mind explores the reciprocal relationship between science and design in the contemporary world by bringing together design objects and concepts that marry the most advanced scientific research with attentive consideration of human limitations, habits, and aspirations. The exhibition highlights designers’ ability to grasp momentous changes in technology, science, and history—changes that demand or reflect major adjustments in human behavior—and translate them into objects that people can actually understand and use. This Web site presents over three hundred of these works, including fifty projects that are not featured in the gallery exhibition. Originally launched in February of 2008.... More

The Royal Mint - New Designs

He has literally stamped his mark on the future, by redesigning the past. Truly, if you needed proof, here's how one person with some original thinking can affect millions of people. Open Doors Student Site

Open Doors Student SiteAs wary as we are to post anything on Digitalthread with a religious slant (Note: you may notice two things we almost never post about is religion and alcohol-related products), we are fans of this rather simple tri-tone (actually it's 5-toned) design of this youth-oriented Christian site. It used to be that many of these organizations had horrible design standards, but over the last 5 years they have poured more money into design, recognizing the benefits of graphics in attracting a younger audience. Does this slicker design package breed a skeptical distrust among other "non-affiliates"? Naturally, it might, but who is to say these "firms" cannot engage in smart marketing of their own message and "products"? It leads to all sorts of prickly questions around the branding of religions that this editor cannot hope to undertake in this forum, nor is it prudent to do so... but do feel free... More
