EnBW Spamrecycler

EnBW SpamrecyclerHow many do you get each day? As you can expect, we get hundreds. But there's hope! In one of the more curious experimental designs we've seen in recent years, the Spam Recycler turns your data waste into art. We're not sure how it works - sounds like Star Trek technology - but somehow the emails you submit get shredded and broken down into little particles and then are used to create virtual graphics and small personal pieces that you can print out or use as a desktop background. Brilliant!... More

FAILE

FAILEIf you're not familiar with his work, FAILE is one of the modern day gods of the half-tone dot, stencil art, and gritty pop-culture graphics—and we were ecstatic to discover this website covering his unique multimedia designs. Done up like a sort of yellow pages ads on LSD, FAILE's many projects pick up where Andy Warhol left off... Prints, stencils, screenprints, and videos that resemble a street art-inspired cross between CONCRETE TV (MNN) and the Cartoon Network run through a photo copier. There's just too many gems in his site to list here, but let's say: clicking around will be heavily rewarded. For us, beyond a doubt, one of the best sites and artists of the year.... More

Fantastic Forest

Fantastic ForestDesigned by one of the web's best, this National Geographic module cleanly integrates navigation, 3-D art, and content into a fun user playground. Part of the challenge of these modules is working under NatGee's high standards - and the Fantastic Forest went the extra mile. Fantastic was of the first sites to effectively create an immersive navigational experience through an intricate use of frames. The choice of colors, tones, and use of beveled edges to cover screen space greatly enhances the usability by providing a novel browser experience. This was one of the first sites to seamlessly hide frames into the design - something which radically and positively changed the way people approached web design - while creating a rich media experience. see also: Nat Gee Interactive Features Index... Flight 404

Flight 404All aboard for a cruise through a healthy number of spacial and dynamic Flash modules - strapped into a airline metaphor interface. Finding the way to your seat is half the fun here as the 'inspector'-style interface guides you through over 40 modules to date. There are also a few additional areas, including a user submition database and a couple more that are currently in development. Robert himself has said, in an interview with Extra Lucky Design, that the idea for this site came directly from Joshua Davis's Praystation, but that his goal is to make it even better.... More

forest for the trees

forest for the treesAn impressive interactive design concept supported by excellent functionality: this is one of the first 4.0 generation sites that really delivers - concept, visuals, sound, interactivity + variety. The website design plays on the phrase "you can't see the forest for the trees." Individual artists were each commissioned to do an interactive interpretation of a particular track for the Dreamworks album without knowing what the other participants were doing, or how it would all come together. The result is a forest of trees testifying to the inspiration of the visionary soundscapes in Forest for the Trees.... More

Fuse98Lab

Fuse98LabA popular place for exhibiting new experiments and exploring narratives while examining the powers and usability of DHTML and design. Similar to Remedi, Fuse98Lab is a "virtual laboratory dedicated to exploration", featuring a series of new works by emerging and proven artists each week. A various array of plug-ins and 'nano-recent' browsers are necessary to view all the pieces (which may cause your system to overload). The design is grid-based & very tight, similar to the Fuse98 site as featured in last months webgallery.... More

fusionOne

fusionOneA crisp and clean tonal site for an online application that syncs together your personal, business and executive information, calendars and memos into one common ground online regardless of platform or device. The design is utilitarian, with lots of clean space highlighted by software quality icons. The green tonals create a pleasant atmosphere for the site's presence - a pleasant break from mostly blue and grey branded application interfaces.... More

Interact 10 Ways

Interact 10 Ways | Getty ImagesIn a semi-promotional experimental collaboration, Getty Images teams up with 5 renown designers and agencies (Sumona, The Barbarian Group, Tomato, Less Rain and Great Works) to create 10 exploratory interactive pieces. The firms conceptualized and developed some interesting hybrids of playful interaction and visual experimentations that focus on and around photographs from Getty's huge archive of stock imagery. And each module has its own interesting aspects, but the two by Sumona (the only designer without an established web presence) - especially one called "information" - are just not to be missed.... javascript tip of the week

javascript tip of the weekClean HTML layout complimented by pleasantly simple design for this weekly Javascript tip resource - ease of use is the key. The beauty of the site is the designer's choice not to overly design it. J.S.T.O.W. is an indispensible resource for any web designer interested in adding small interactive elements to their web design repetoire. An excellent place to start learning some JavaScript. Adfter you've examined this site, move onto Nick's second site, webcoder for in-depth tutorials on applying JavaScripts to DHTML. This site has since fallen under neglect, but could still be a good place for a scripting beginner to learn some cool JavaScript effects, as well as 100 other places in WWW. This was just one of the first clean originals.... More

M!nd

M!ndUsing the tagline, "Cultural ammunition for better business", M!nd is an experimental news filtering tool and idea refueling station created by a branding company called Modernista!. M!nd provides the ammunition they need to help draw out emerging patterns from events occuring around the world. It acts as a type of news filter coupled with cultural introspection that helps digest the overflow of information individuals are bombarded with on a daily basis. Literally M!nd is what Modernista! uses along with their clients to help them "mind" their business by making sense of the world around them. It's a fascinating application, and since anyone can use it, you may find yourself returning to it on more than one occasion (even though it seems like updates have mostly stopped since 2003). The M!nd has no limits. Since this posting, we discovered M!nd was actually the very first incarnation of the Modernista! website. And... More

Mr. Noodlebox

Mr. NoodleboxMr. Noodlebox was probably one of the earliest Tek-nical sites online, and this archived experiment - created before all the rage and possibilities of Flash - still holds a stiff noodle up to the competition. These Flash 'toys' as the author describes them are bundled together simply for your pleasure and amusement. Rightly so, this pieces are fun, colorful, well designed, and they still amuse, even if they were originally created in late 1997.... More
