Jody Barton is one of those special characters in design. Born and raised in the British Isles and educated in London at The Royal College of Arts, his typographic art has a certain painful honesty to it... which we like to call 'un-irony'. When most trendy designers are doing the "cool" irreverant thing—Jody is actually feeling the pain and not faking the expression. This un-ironic attitude – arrived at by choice, but also a cultivated perspective born from frustration – is expressed in worded and iconographic detail on skateboards, surfboards, vinyl cuts of his work, stickers, T-shirts, books, pamphlets, hand-assembled custom bicycles, tattoos on his own body, and basically anything he can put pen or ink to. "Sophistication" is a word that pops into mind as we view this portfolio of interactive designer Chris Robinson, from the U.K. There's a certain reserved air of confidence in the work displayed; the design of the site, his selective photography, and the subtle choices made to enhance the viewer experience. A very enjoyable portfolio of a U.K.-based graphic designer and experimental interactive thinker. Michael's work spans the spectrum of design, with work ranging from book covers to 3D motion experiements. We really liked his minimal site with large images, and from top to bottom each piece shines with its own vibrancy. Great use of colors—and black and white.... More
Perhaps you are familiar with the analogy that the best barber in town has the worst haircut? Well, such is the case with Andersen M Studio, an oustanding independent creative studio with a less than spectacular website. It was formed by graphic designer, photographer and musician Martin Andersen (MA, RCA) in 2001, and because the site itself isn't Flashy or extremely well kept, it tells us something about the artists behind the work... For one, that they are too busy art directing cd sleeves, cranking out great print work, and making original music to be bothered with the ins and outs of HTML, CSS, and all the rest. Stuart Tolley Studio is the online home of U.K.-based Stuart Tolley, who was previously a designer at Sleazenation, and then Esquire Magazine. Stuart formed his own studio to house his award winning work - created for various lifestyle clients from the world of independent record labels and book publishers, to fashion labels and magazine publishers. His work features some great typography, in either (or both) "clean" minimal, and "dirty" distressed styles. And we really enjoyed his book cover designs.... More

Their bread and butter is mainly directing print campaigns, band and label identity for the music industry, but the company has proved itself equally fluent in other areas. In recent years clients have diversified, and the projects have widened to embrace branding, websites, e-flyers, motiongraphics, books, brochures, typefaces, and even TV titles.... More
Telegramme is a pretty cool little design and illustration partnership specialising in silk screen printing of posters and patterns. Initially a collaboration working via the postal service, Telegramme snowballed in to a fully fuctional studio thanks to a mutual love of music, art and the receiving of post. We really liked their gritty mixed up illustration style that balances old vintage images with new computer design techniques - which coalesces nicely in their afore-mentioned poster and pattern designs. Their work revolves around digital communications, be it advertising, marketing or technology... and the results are quite powerful. Even their home site runs like a series of ads for a number of top products - from Diesel to PSP, mook has their finger on the pulse of digital media and invigorates it with new ideas from a powerful team of creative specialists.... The online home of Less Rain is energized by all the rich media you could name. It's a powerhouse of design prototypes, which is especially impressive from such a small company. Less Rain has a particular ethos: "making a few design elements work more intelligently, unusually, and organically." Their portfolio is a rich compendium of web works for clients like Red Bull and Hennessy, but offline works include the world's largest victory monument for the Nike Scorpion Football Event. Trevor Jackson is a London based creative force who began a convoluted career in music and the arts by designing record sleeves. He currently works in graphic design, art direction, moving image, music writing, remixing, installations and performance arts. In the "design world", he has created many iconic and classic record cover sleeves, bus is also just as well known in the "music world" for his eclectic remixes and his record label OUTPUT, and in turn, he creates most of the artwork for the musical artists on the label. Freshlysqueezed is the very crisp and clean personal portfolio of interactive designer, Guy Moorhouse... who - at this posting - is to begin working fulltime at Airside, a London-based interactive agency. Since this is the first incarnation of his portfolio, we were very impressed with several things: It was clean, it used big type that was easy to read, it had really simple navigation, and it had little Flash subtleties (yes, sounds like an oxymoron) that made us realize this Guy thinks about usability for the medium.
