Redbloc

RedblocRedbloc is a Communist-era-themed web site for a small interactive studio that produces some very nice original work. The site introduces you to some very ironically cute communist characters and illustrations, framed by detailed 'kartuschki' - those delicate Eastern European floral patterns. However, Redblock is actually based in Singapore, and illustrations aside, specializes in creating very beautiful solutions for web and print design, as found in their portfolio area. A very healthy balance of great work and playfull drawings.... More

Milky Elephant

Milky ElephantMilky Elephant is a professional collective of three unique design artists based in New York. This collective consists of Karl Ackermann, Eun-Ha Paek and Mumbleboy (a.k.a. Kinya Hanada), who together make installations, games, illustrations, music videos, animated series, and artistically inspired designs. They work on an eclectic variety of funky projects spanning from toy design to viral interactive e-postcards that you've probably helped spread. Very quirky, often miniture and cute, it seems like they have a niche around being silly and youthful, which also shows in the variety of mediums they like to craft their projects (everything from coin purses to TV interstitials). Also check out The Milky Shop, the cool pink retro nav (that we really like) and the sites of the three design artists.... More

Mark Ryden

Mark RydenFilled with oddities, curiosities, blank stares, happy rabbits, prime cuts of meat and some religious imagery, it's difficult not to include the painted oils of Mark Ryden in the design company listing. Sort of an Edward Gorey for the 21st century, these often bizarre paintings are simply the innocent creations of a child's mind - the kind of mind that creates and builds with no constraints and adult barriers. It's just so different and original - with only a few examples of editorial paintings in this impressive and deep portfolio - we had to list this work here under the illustration category. And that's not all! If you liked this work, you may also want to see the art sites of: Joe Sorren, Ryan Heshka, Jeff Soto, Bob Dob, Michael Brown and Elbereth Moore. Enjoy!... More

brutalgiftland

brutalgiftlandAn interesting portfolio site for illustrator Mark Shepherd. His work is a mix of collage-like graphic pieces, that includes illustration, graphic design and also audio, with his project, "cold_elf" sounds. The portfolio has a nice woodsy kitsch backdrop, yet in a contrast with (or perhaps because of) his somewhat rural design style and tastes, it is fused with sensible interactive elements, buttons and navigation. For us, everything about the site is warm, tasteful and inviting and the style lends itself well to the fusion of work found inside. (We even liked the entry page solution, and did not hate the pop-up in this instance of the site design). A pleasure to visit and explore.... More

Pixelextravaganza

PixelextravagazaThe home of a pixel and mosaic maniac, Pixelextravagaza is one of the many online homes of Norbert Bayer. He's a pixel artist and illustrator, exhibits throughout Europe and Israel and works for several record labels and magazines worldwide. If his pixel creations sometimes seem a little too lifelike, it's because they are! Made with actual plastic pieces placed on a grid (using a children's game called Ministeck), Mr. Bayer is not constrained to just the digital pixel, but often creates true mosaics piece by physical piece. Check out his other sites for the full spread of his work.... More

Drew Flaherty

Drew FlahertyAn engrossing showcase of photo-illustrated design, wispy graphics, explosive compostions and the random skull, graffiti tag, or rainbow next to a beautiful model. Sure it's trendy, and nothing you haven't really seen before... or is it? On closer inspection, the work of Drew Flaherty goes an extra step, breathing in more detail into each inch of design, and producing a rich tapestry of different styles that together evoke quite a beautiful, mystical quality. Who needs substance when you can have visual satisfaction and a lingering emotion that makes you think, je ne sais quoi? There are nuggets in this mountain of multidiscipliary work... you just have to dig deeper.... More

Ashi Portfolio

Ashi PortfolioCrisp, clean and designed from head-to-toe, Ashi (the illustrator behind Football Heros) gives us one of our favorite overall portfolio designs. The wood-based veneer from this gifted illustrator displays a set of small interactive sketchbooks that we can easily flip through to sample some fantastic illustrations, print work, font design, drawings and more. It's so perfect - it immediately gives us an idea of his talent - it's almost like a package where the wrapping is just as good as the contents... We don't even want to undo the ribbon.... More

The Rock Collection

The Rock CollectionYou know you're a talented graphic designer when you create a 3-page website, plaster in a bunch of huge jpeg samples of your work, and don't even bother to put in a back button. It's like... who needs a website with navigation when the work speaks for itself... and your browser has a 'back' button embedded in it anyway? Well, this is one of those special occasions where it truly doesn't matter, because in the personal portfolio of Philippe Richardson, the illustration work and stills of broadcast commercials (some with Quicktime movies) will blow you away, and you won't even notice you're sitting at your desk anymore, much less which direction you want to navigate (besides simply scrolling up and down... over and over and over again).... There are no rules, no limits to communication, no keys, no alarms, and no ground floor, so come in and enjoy the fantastic print work.... More

Murmures

Original web design? Surely an oxymoron! Au contraire. Manuel Mouillard has achieved this, several times over. This fun portfolio offers unique samples showcasing an individual style, as well as a novel use of music. This is very high praise (and we mean it) in a world of cookie-cutter design. Mouillard’s illustrations feel like teenage comic book drawings, and what’s lacking in fine art is acheived by true art –- offering a clear message visually. Turn down the volume if you must, but play with the site and samples. They play back.... More

studio aka

studio akaConstruction paper cutouts and ‘primitive’ pen marks run rampant at the studio aka site. Some nice illustrations, but after perusing the sample pages, we have to say, um, "been there, done that." Sure, they've won awards, but if the London based production company doesn’t inject a little variety (and reach out from the UK), their days may be numbered. That being said, they can probably use the ‘singular style’ style for identity recognition, aka "branding."... More
