Filled with oddities, curiosities, blank stares, happy rabbits, prime cuts of meat and some religious imagery, it's difficult not to include the painted oils of Mark Ryden in the design company listing. Sort of an Edward Gorey for the 21st century, these often bizarre paintings are simply the innocent creations of a child's mind - the kind of mind that creates and builds with no constraints and adult barriers. The home of a pixel and mosaic maniac, Pixelextravagaza is one of the many online homes of Norbert Bayer. He's a pixel artist and illustrator, exhibits throughout Europe and Israel and works for several record labels and magazines worldwide. If his pixel creations sometimes seem a little too lifelike, it's because they are! Made with actual plastic pieces placed on a grid (using a children's game called Ministeck), Mr. Bayer is not constrained to just the digital pixel, but often creates true mosaics piece by physical piece. The wood-based veneer from this gifted illustrator displays a set of small interactive sketchbooks that we can easily flip through to sample some fantastic illustrations, print work, font design, drawings and more. It's so perfect - it immediately gives us an idea of his talent - it's almost like a package where the wrapping is just as good as the contents... We don't even want to undo the ribbon.... More

Construction paper cutouts and ‘primitive’ pen marks run rampant at the studio aka site. Some nice illustrations, but after perusing the sample pages, we have to say, um, "been there, done that." Sure, they've won awards, but if the London based production company doesn’t inject a little variety (and reach out from the UK), their days may be numbered. That being said, they can probably use the ‘singular style’ style for identity recognition, aka "branding."... More
