His skills span art direction, print design, illustration and animation... We're especially big fans of collage work right now, and taking that concept one step further... we really feel like the collective work of the artists in this studio – working on everything from t-shirts to posters, cd sleeves and magazines – has some very powerful potential. Zhiwei Bai

Zhiwei BaiIt's not often that we get to feature a talented Chinese-based artist and designer such as Zhiwei Bai. Born in 1981, Zhiwei is a typographic designer whose beautifully balanced work exhibits a timeless quality—it features a collage and shape-inspired minimal style, with blocky typography that at once seems childish, yet modern. In a sense, it is a youthful mix of Swiss bauhaus design and Chinese calligraphy. Recently two of his works won the merit of 53rd Annual Type Directors Club (New York) and they will be published in Typography 28 and exhibited in six traveling shows, internationally. As a member of The Art Directors Club of New York and Shenzhen Graphic Design Association – has won a number of local and international awards in his professional field, such as The Art Directors Club of New York Awards (NYADC). Atmostheory

AtmostheoryThe graphic work of Christopher David Ryan is an interesting mix of abstract modernist design – and at times, illustrated typography. His work pushes through the rather broad line between design and painting, and tends to exhibit an emotional, yet light mood with color and free-flowing strokes and delicate curves. Quite an interesting hybrid of design and art—that defies standard definitions and categories.... More

Jody Barton

Jody Barton - Graphic ArtistJody Barton is one of those special characters in design. Born and raised in the British Isles and educated in London at The Royal College of Arts, his typographic art has a certain painful honesty to it... which we like to call 'un-irony'. When most trendy designers are doing the "cool" irreverant thing—Jody is actually feeling the pain and not faking the expression. This un-ironic attitude – arrived at by choice, but also a cultivated perspective born from frustration – is expressed in worded and iconographic detail on skateboards, surfboards, vinyl cuts of his work, stickers, T-shirts, books, pamphlets, hand-assembled custom bicycles, tattoos on his own body, and basically anything he can put pen or ink to. Raw, real, ridiculously talented, and not to be missed.... More

It's quite appealing, and we love the little fishes, swimming around, but we were a bit challenged by the side-scrolling presentation... contrary to the soothing atmosphere, we just were not quite comfortable leaving our browser in mid-scroll. Also, some of the HTML links are just too light to be read. But beyond that, the work is outstanding. They have accomplished wonders in print and design for books, and the website design and corporate work is not too shabby either! For book covers to brochures, magazines and more, Liquid is the place to dive in a take a swim. Just don't scare the fishes, or get the pages wet.... More

Stay Honest

Stay HonestHonestly, Honest is at the forefront of the new archetype in advertising and design, blending the subversive and the ideal solution all in one. And the easy going folks at Honest cover it all. They've got their print ads and web sites, which are all fine and good, but what is really exciting are their short films and commercials, commissioned by the likes of Diesel, Nike, the band The Gorillaz, and more. What happens when graphic design sensibilities are transposed into short works of cinema? Try downloading a few, and we think you'll agree that the results are awesome. Stay true to Honest, and you'll be surprised with the outcome.... More

Tenmetal

TenmetalTenmetal is the teutonic design portfolio of Paul Wagner, independent Art Director (originally born in Vienna). The smooth interface and chic layout make Tenmetal a sturdy soldier in the all's-fair-in-love-and-war-like business of advertising. With classic German efficency, the mix of photo-graphic collage is perfect for the straight shooting presentation... and the monochromatic hues in Paul's designs are the signature style and the smoking barrel in his fully-loaded design chambers.... Abiuro

AbiuroOn the surface, Abiuro is simply a personal portfolio of a graphic designer living in Sao Paulo, Brazil. That would be the simple perception. However -- true to his nations' lively aggression -- this body of work reflects a very bold and colorful panoply of print works. We really liked the multiple large portfolio images, which really bring out the quality of the design... quality which would compete at the highest level with the graphic design from any country or firm.... Murmures

Original web design? Surely an oxymoron! Au contraire. Manuel Mouillard has achieved this, several times over. This fun portfolio offers unique samples showcasing an individual style, as well as a novel use of music. This is very high praise (and we mean it) in a world of cookie-cutter design. Mouillard’s illustrations feel like teenage comic book drawings, and what’s lacking in fine art is acheived by true art –- offering a clear message visually. Turn down the volume if you must, but play with the site and samples. They play back.... More

Martin Fewell

Martin FewellLondon Art Monkey seeks clients interested in presenting a pseudo-Asian, semi-70’s vibe. Promoting magenta, lime and orange as the colours of the mo. Please ring on 555-UK-ROCKS for more info. We dig it, big time. Martin Fewell’s funky fonts are on display, as well as snippets of his website design and some print work, at this conveniently arranged portfolio pad. Some very nice work for past clients is here, but a fair bit of the best is in the “pitches” section. Loads of eye candy. The ideal ad-man for groooovy CD covers, as well as companies like Orange and a restaurant named Yellow. Check it out, man.... More

Evan Hecox

Evan HecoxPrimarily an exhibition artist, Evan Hecox has a smallish portfolio, but the pieces that form his online presence are tight. This guy knows what he's doing. The messages are rich and well balanced, although it’s sometimes difficult to know exactly what Mr. Hecox is trying to sell. Frankly, we find this a refreshing and novel situation in the current land of graphic art.... More

OrangeYouGlad

OrangeYouGladWe love this Brooklyn firm already, and we're not even past their classic knock-knock joke name. (It gets better; this firm's logline is 'Apeeling Graphic Design.') Converged Technologies

You can't really say "Been there, done that" when the "there" and the "that" are as attractive as what Converged Technologies offers. Mashinima

MashinimaWe're not quite sure what Mashinma does; we can assume that Grupo Audiovisual means that they're a firm which works in multimedia; Illustracion means they do Illustration; Print and Web mean, well, print and web. So apparently Mashinima does everything, and to prove it they have a site with no English but plenty of eerie imagery -- stone cherubs that change colors, futuristic citsycapes, flowers that bloom out of nowhere. It's one of the loveliest sites we've seen. But, um, we're still not too clear on what they're all about.... More

Dry

DryDry puts it up front: they're addicted to consumerism, and they make ads, as well as short films, that make people want to buy things. Their campaigns are specifically marketed towards teenagers, so their site features clever graphic designs, flashy images, and sexy women in jeans. Their site is actually hard to navigate – we're still not sure what's what – but at least it looks cool, which is probably all that matters to teenagers.... More

Hydrafuse

"Albums and shirts. Websites and rock. That pretty much sums up Hydrafuse." That's what they say, but we think they're underselling themselves. And by "they," we mean Gregg Bernstein, who founded the freelance company in 1999, and since then has found himself creating album covers, website, t-shirts, and other graphic designs for some pretty swell bands. Bau-Da Design Lab

Bau-Da Design LabBau-Da is responsible for some of the most well conceived, designed, and illustrated CD cover art the MTV generation has owned and enjoyed (sometimes making the box more interesting than the contents). The site is appropriately dumbed-down for compatibility with America, which makes exploring their projects a breeze. FluffCo

Graphic design that feels like a visit to a not-as-wealthy-as-they’d-have-you-believe distant relative’s cabin at the lake – right down to the wood paneling. This collaborative effort by two fine art degree carrying designers is a good choice for basic website design and print advertising with an ‘organic’, laid-back feel and a slightly discordant nature. Not a first choice but probably a good fit for the needs of the “small to mid-sized clients” (they measure their clients?) the “creative partnership” cater to.... More
