Satellites Mistaken for Stars

Satellites | Alexander EggerIf you want to see some great collages and mixed media art in a graphic style, look no further than the explorations and emissions of Italian-born artist Alexander Egger. This simple site is a collection of his thoughtful, beautiful, visual essays and explorations, which come in the form of several short 'zines and even his own monograph, published by Ginko Press. While Alex has several conduits for creating expressive mixed media pieces, much of his professional work is minimal and reserved in both color palette and composition – but his knack for breaking the rules with his own artistic style is what makes his work expressive and contemporary. Great identity work, print, posters, and graphic installations.... More

Visual Dialogue

Visual DialogueHere's a prime example of an outstanding, awarded, professional design firm with every accolade in the field, great clients, a creative director with his own permanent gallery collection at Cooper-Hewitt, and yet... their company web site – while we did like the large-scale photographs – is lacking some basic IA to make it easier to navigate. It's too bad; because a few changes could really make it shine—it's just harder than necessary to get to all the great projects inside this site! But hey, website aside – when it comes to identity design, branding, posters, print work and packaging, you would be hard-pressed to find a stronger firm to help you develop professional, breakthrough creative designs.... Paprika

PaprikaPaprika is a Canadian graphic design firm with a strong reputation in creating brand identites, packaging and print collateral. On their site, as in their stationary, we see hints of a toned down identity which involves the repetition of words, forming a light minimal texture and suggestion of a bar code design. Their technique is modern, yet marketable, meaning that it is both refined, yet approachable – perfect for high-end and luxury clients – and inside these pages you'll find a portfolio of print projects whose appearance is quite professional.... Opolis Design

Opolis DesignOpolis is a strong print and packaging design firm that is everything you heard it's cracked up to be. It has consistently produced work for a cavalcade of respected brands that make people say, "Well, that's some cavalcade of respected brands." Names like Nike, adidas and Dr. Martins spring to mind... as things I'd like to have wrapped around my foot. Well, when you see those things displayed in print, you may just be looking at the "crack" design work of Opolis Design.... More

AxeAnt

AxeAntA growin' garden portfolio for Spring time features some nice drawing, etching, print & webdesign. Although it's a bit tough to manage – viewing and keeping track of your visits in these rows of items – there are a few illustrated gems to be found... You just have to be skilled and patient enough to dig for them. We guess (like Spring itself) it's all about growth, adventure, and change.... More

Creative Intelligence

Creative Intelligence It could never be sufficient in this small space to sum up the cornucopia of invitation design and print work done by Marc Friedland and his recent off-spring; the Creative Intelligence studio. He is literally the King of Invites—a one-of-a-kind, single-minded artist working in the field of invitations, who can boast over 2,000,000 invitations created over 20 years... And we're talking quality AND quantity here. In fact there's a 13 minute video depicting his design history that is actually pretty interesting. Yes, he's a happy fellow, because invitation are his business – and the site exudes that cheery, bright, glitzy, Hollywood feel, with just the right amount of restraint. If you are interested (at all) in print design, event branding and invitations then this is all old news to you... but if you haven't, well then... meet your invitation design royalty.... More

Transfer Studio

Transfer StudioTransfer is a small "logo-less" print design studio based in London. Why they have no logo on their site is a mystery to us – since they specialize in logos, typography and letterhead development for their tight group of clients. But no matter... Who says they need one anyway? Not when they create such powerful and clean design work for print, packaging, and even make some pretty slick looking websites too. Their entire portfolio, in fact, is a testament to the undeniable power of solid typographical skills... from a firm that has no logo—go figure.... More

Bill McMullen

Bill McMullenWhere popular culture and urban street art meet is where you will find Bill McMullen, a New York design talent who got his start putting together club and show flyers while he was in school in San Diego, California. Here, at his portfolio, you will find an eclectic mix of mashed-up street art, pop culture, apparel and graphic design. Previously designing hip-hop albums at Def Jam's design subsidiary "The Drawing Board" for three years, Bill more recently has been out on his own pursuing other projects like his SwishNYC label and his own art. McMullen's clients include Beastie Boys, Adidas, Criterion Collection and MTV, as well as his own projects like t-shirts, limited edition jewelry, and the vinyl 'Shuttlemax' toy with KidRobot. Of all the "mash-ups," one of our favorites is the shell-top Adidas/AD-AT from Star Wars. Bill is currently (2007) working for Burton and Adidas.... More

Trozo Studio

Trozo StudioTrozo is the personal creative studio of Eduardo Valdivieso, an Italian living in Los Angeles, who produces some very strong print and web design work. His skills span art direction, print design, illustration and animation... Kind of like a modern day renaissance man (and we're not just saying tha because he has roots in Italy), Eduardo really does have the ability to create a range of different styles—from distressed and "arty"... to clean, and "Microsofty".... Mopa Studio

Mopa StudioA brand new illustration and graphic design studio from Brasilia, Brazil, Mopa has a great flair for color, illustration, print and graphic design. We're especially big fans of collage work right now, and taking that concept one step further... we really feel like the collective work of the artists in this studio – working on everything from t-shirts to posters, cd sleeves and magazines – has some very powerful potential. We really loved their improvement on the single page scroller that doesn't use frames—only nice, valid HTML and CSS.... More

Zhiwei Bai

Zhiwei BaiIt's not often that we get to feature a talented Chinese-based artist and designer such as Zhiwei Bai. Born in 1981, Zhiwei is a typographic designer whose beautifully balanced work exhibits a timeless quality—it features a collage and shape-inspired minimal style, with blocky typography that at once seems childish, yet modern. In a sense, it is a youthful mix of Swiss bauhaus design and Chinese calligraphy. Recently two of his works won the merit of 53rd Annual Type Directors Club (New York) and they will be published in Typography 28 and exhibited in six traveling shows, internationally. As a member of The Art Directors Club of New York and Shenzhen Graphic Design Association – has won a number of local and international awards in his professional field, such as The Art Directors Club of New York Awards (NYADC). Simply, beautiful work.... More
